GROUP CLASSES

Breakdance #1: So you've always wanted to learn how to break, but never knew where to start? You're in luck! Our beginner class is a great introduction to the world of Bboying and Bgirling. Students will begin to learn the foundation vocabulary of Breakin' (toprock, footwork, freezes) and work on understanding the posture, style, and musicality of the dance. There is a huge emphasis on improving strength and flexibility, so that students will be able to execute more and more difficult moves without injury. Students will also be introduced to the concept of improvisation or ‘freestyling' within the dance.

Breakdance #2: Students who have completed Breakdance #1, or who have a background in breakdance, will enjoy our intermediate Breakin' class. While learning more advanced footwork and freezes, and basic spins, students will continue to work on their strength and endurance. They will be taught about the history and foundation of Breakin', but this class also encourages students to work on developing their own style, with a strong focus on freestyling, and set building.

Break fusion: The class draws from concepts in Breakin', Contemporary dance, Pilates, Yoga, and Ballet, to create a highly athletic yet fluid technique. Students will gain core and upper body strength, stamina, and flexibility, as they expand their movement vocabulary on the floor. Students will also have the chance to improve their 'freestyle' skills, and learn sections of choreography from the repetoire of the Solid State Breakdance Company. Break Fusion is an ideal class for contemporary, classical, or street dancers who are looking to expand their interpretations of flow, musicality, and organic movement.

House: Also known as ‘Clubbing', House dance is fun and energetic, focusing on fast fancy footwork and understanding the rhythm and flow of House music. Students will begin each class with a short warm-up, and then learn a number of basic steps and transitions, which are worked into short choreographies. The instructor JoDee Allen, draws from her extensive dance background (including Tap dance, B-girling, Jazz, House, Lindy Hop, Ballet etc…) to create her own style of House dancing.

Power-moves: Windmills, Flares, swipes…when most people think of Breakin' these are the moves they visualize. However, while an experienced dancer may seem to perform them effortlessly, there's nothing easy about them!!! Along with learning the techniques involved in executing various power-moves, students will be taught a number of exercises designed to improve the specific strength and explosive energy required to execute these movements. Students are also various entries into each move, in order to be able to integrate power into their freestyling. Students interested in signing up for the Powermoves class are encouraged to have completed Breakdance #1, or have a background in dance or acrobatics.

Pilates (Private and Semi-Private instruction): Pilates is a physical training system that was created by German boxer Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century. The program is designed to increase strength and flexibility, and lengthen and align the spine, without building bulky muscles. Whether you are recovering from a back injury, or just trying to get in better shape, our certified Pilates instructors will be able to put together a program geared towards your needs. Mat, ball, and reformer training is available.

Hip Hop: If you ever wanted to learn the party dances in Hip Hop that influenced music videos and apply them to routines, then this class is for you. This class will help students learn the basic grooves and techniques of various dances in Hip-Hop and its influences. The instructor will break down basic steps in the warm-up and choreography. Students will also learn how to apply these steps in their freestyle, to aid with auditions or just for fun at parties.
